Trains offer a convenient form of travel. They’re relatively quick, can be inexpensive if you book strategically, and there are stations in or close to every town. But, train journeys can be arduous, especially if you’re covering a long distance. You might enjoy spending the first hour looking at the scenery out of the window. But, for some, staring out of the window can become monotonous, while others might find it triggers travel sickness. Below, we look at six steps and tips to help you prepare for a long train journey, to make it as painless and pleasant as possible.

Charge Your Mobile Devices And Install Apps

In many ways, the modern train traveler is fortunate. We not only have access to mobile devices, but mobile Internet is accessible on most train journeys. Before you leave, ensure you’ve charged your cell phone, tablet, laptop, AirPods, and other mobile devices. Take a battery bank if you’re going on an especially long journey. Install any entertainment apps you’ll be able to use to pass the time. You likely already have a music streaming service, but make sure your TV streaming services are updated.

Also install a couple of mobile games, and add your favorite casino apps. Because gambling laws can vary according to where you are when you’re playing, using a non-GamStop casino, like those listed by Techopedia, will ensure you can still play your favorite slots and table games no matter where you are. According to tech editor Kane Pepi, these casinos do not have the same registration requirements as other casinos so your play won’t be restricted.

Have Everything On Hand

Pack a light carry bag that you can keep on you. Make sure it’s secure and keep your food, a light jacket, and other essentials in here. Also ensure you have easy access to your tickets and, if you need it, your passport. A lot of this information can be stored digitally, too, so keep everything you can on your phone.

Take A Book

If your phone battery dies, or you can’t get a signal to play online games, you can still rely on analog entertainment. Take a favorite book or use the opportunity to cross something off your bucket list of books. Becoming engrossed in a book is a great way to tick off the hours and you’ll be surprised how quickly a train journey can pass.

Get Comfortable

Consider the time of day you’re traveling, as well as the season and even the areas you’ll be passing. Dress appropriately, but be prepared for a change in weather conditions. Wear something comfortable and even consider adding a travel pillow or other accessories that will help you grab a quick nap during the journey. If you do sleep, set an alarm on your phone to make sure you don’t miss your stop.

Pack Snacks

Some trains have snack cars. Some even have bars. And bigger train stations have some type of refreshments, but you can’t guarantee what will be available, and if you’re relying on somebody coming around selling snacks on the train itself, you will be beholden to their schedule. Pack some light, healthy travel snacks in your bag. If you’re on an especially long journey, you can take some more substantial food items, but pack them in airtight containers—it doesn’t just keep them fresh, it prevents the aroma from bothering your fellow passengers.

Pack As Light As Possible

Luggage room on trains is limited. If you’re on a quiet route, you should be fine for bag space. Otherwise, you will find yourself having to guard and watch your bags. Pack as light as possible so it is easier to retrieve and move your luggage, and so you don’t have to bump and bang your way down the train aisle.
