Pajaro Valley sophomore Hemeria De La Torre tossed a gem in the Grizzlies’ 18-1 mercy rule victory in five innings over Anzar in Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division softball action Monday afternoon. She allowed just one run on two hits and five walks while tallying eight strikeouts.

De La Torre also batted 3-for-3 with one triple, four RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while teammate senior Elena Barron had three hits, three RBIs and scored three runs for the Grizzlies. Freshman Nadia Renteria batted 4-for-4 with one double, one RBI and three runs scored for Pajaro Valley, and teammate senior Angelique Torres had a pair of hits to go along with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Senior Olivia Contreras, junior Virginia Escobar and junior Jaqueline Alvarez each had one base hit and scored two runs for Pajaro Valley (3-7, 2-2), which plays at Gonzales (1-7, 1-1) in PCAL Cypress Division play Wednesday at 4:30pm. 

High school baseball

Palma 5, at St. Francis 4: Senior Nash Horton had one home run and scored three runs in the Sharks’ loss to the Chieftains in PCAL Gabilan Division action Tuesday afternoon. Teammate senior Dononvan Dominguez had a pair hits, while senior Javier Fonseca, junior Nick Fantl, sophomore Max Madrigal, freshman Jacob Fonseca and senior Mason Borrego each tallied one base hit.

Senior pitcher Evan Dyer allowed three runs—two earned—on four hits and five walks while recording a game-best 12 strikeouts in five innings pitched for St. Francis (8-5, 5-4), which plays at Palma (11-2, 5-2) in league action Thursday at 4pm. 

Boys volleyball

Watsonville 3, Ceiba 0: The Wildcatz improved to 8-0 in PCAL Cypress Division play following a three-set 25-7, 25-13, 25-14 win over the Spartans on Monday evening. Watsonville (8-3, 8-0) will host Anzar (2-3, 2-1) in league action Friday at 6pm.
