The Pajaro Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees on Wednesday will consider a plan to cut roughly 100 employee positions, a discussion that will be held in the Watsonville City Council chambers and likely draw hundreds of people.

Among the proposed cuts are 80 certificated positions, including 12 elementary release teachers, eight elementary intervention teachers, four high school science teachers and two visual and performing arts teachers .

In addition, the proposal calls for cutting roughly 19 classified positions, including 10 instructional assistants.

The board will also consider approving a one-time $10,000 retirement incentive for teachers who are 60 years or older.

The decision comes to the trustees after a meeting on Jan. 17, when they agreed on a plan to cut more than $5 million to balance the district budget after the loss of one-time funding.

Those funds, Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds, came from the state to help students with issues related to online instruction.

The meeting is scheduled for 6pm in the Watsonville City Council chambers, located on the fourth floor of the city governmental building at 275 Main St. in Watsonville.

  2. California spends over 7 billion per year on a growing homelessness population. 40k+ per year for each homeless person yet we spend about 24 thousand for each k-12 student. This makes sense in CA?

No question CA is the #1 destination for the homeless. Depending on the website, California’s education system is ranked in the middle of the pack.

  3. Thank you Todd, for all of your coverage of PVUSD news. I started subscribing to get this kind of local news reporting. It’s a shame that so many news outlets are run by big corporate monoliths these days. I appreciate your dedication to community news!

  4. Why aren’t some administrators also being cut. They make twice as much as other employees. I think all the after school babysitting for kids ‘should be cut. Schools aren’t supposed to be babysitters after school day ends. It’s the parents responsibility to care for their kids after school day ends, not taxpayers.
If you can’t care for your kids, stop having so many and want taxpayers to pay for the babysitting and recreation after school.
Back in the 50’s there were usually 35 kids in each class and the teachers delt with them. They didn’t have computers either, nor did they have aids for this and that.
    They were outstanding teachers!
