WATSONVILLE — It’s been two years since KDUB 99.9 FM went live on the airwaves.

The radio station will celebrate the occasion with an anniversary event on Sunday at Pinto Lake County Park, 757 Green Valley Road in Watsonville.

The doors will open at 12:30 p.m. The event will feature live music, information booths and more, including dancing horses at 3 p.m.

KDUB is the brainchild of Watsonville native Joel Mijares Jr., who got his start as a DJ in 1989 as a sophomore in high school. Looking to form his own radio station, Mijares began the process in mid-2013, and on Aug. 14, 2015, KDUB, operated by Power Broadcasting Corporation, went live.

“I’m so happy and thankful that a lot of local businesses have embraced us,” he said.

KDUB plays a variety of Mexican country music, Rancheras, Corridos, Tamborazos and Banda music, as well as local bands and evening shows ranging from reggae to electro, old school, freestyle and oldies.

It also announces local events, sports and traffic, as well as national news and headlines.

Broadcasting from the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, Mijares said the radio station has live DJs who play requests on the spot from callers.

“We tell the computer what to play, not let the computer tell us what to play,” he said.
