SANTA CRUZ COUNTY—As winter returned along with its company of wet weather, so did higher numbers of crashes across slickened roadways in Santa Cruz County.

There were 44 crashes Saturday and Sunday around the county as on-and-off-again rain came through, said California Highway Patrol officer Sam Courtney.

The crashes included roll-overs, a car plunging down a hillside into a ravine, a broadside collision at East Lake Avenue at Lincoln Street in Watsonville and a car that ended up on its roof on Highway 17.

No major injuries were reported, Courtney said.

With a slight chance of rain in the coming days, the CHP reminds drivers to slow down when conditions worsen.

“We all have the ability to make the right decision,” Courtney said. “Everyone needs a reminder once in a while. Plan ahead and slow down as wet weather comes so you can arrive at your destination safely.”
