SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — Officials from Santa Cruz County Superior Court on Tuesday warned residents to beware of court-related scams.
According to court Administrative Services Manager Tim Newman, several residents have reported receiving calls and letters alleging missed court dates or jury service.
In the calls, suspects posing as court officials advise residents to take some action in order to avoid further consequences. Residents have also reported receiving letters from a company called Courtdatenotice.com, which attempts to lure people into hiring an attorney to help fight lawsuits.
According to Newman, it is rare for court representatives to contact people by phone, and the court never asks anyone to provide personal or financial information over the phone.
Anyone who receives suspicious calls or letters should call the court at 420-2200 to confirm the legitimacy of the contact. They can also check their caller ID to determine if the phone number matches the court’s number.
Anyone who suspects that they are the victim of a scam should contact local law enforcement or the District Attorney’s Consumer Protection Unit at 454-2050. For information, contact Newman at 420-2332.
