WATSONVILLE—Watsonville City Councilwoman Rebecca Garcia recently awarded certificates to 10 senior citizens at the Watsonville Senior Center who graduated from the A Matter of Balance program.

The national program run by the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County RSVP is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. It does this through an eight-session class offering goal setting, safety awareness and simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

“Falls prevention education can be life-changing, not just for the older adults that participate in these events, but for their loved ones, and even our community,” said Volunteer Center Senior Program Director Tara Ireland.

Since the local launch of the program two years ago, more than 100 seniors have participated.

A Matter of Balance classes will continue throughout the year. Senior programs staff with the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County launched the next round of workshops on Oct. 2. Classes will be held at the Watsonville Senior Center twice a week.
