St. Francis senior quarterback Javier DaRosa-Fonseca scrambled his way into the end zone to help lift the Sharks past Greenfield for a 28-21 win in overtime Friday night. 

Nick Paz and Nic Ibarra put the pressure on defense in the overtime period to make a game-sealing play for the Sharks.

“Couldn’t be more proud of how our team handled adversity against a good Greenfield team,” St. Francis coach John Ausman said in a text message. “The Nic(k)s up front had a great game for us.”

Derek Anderson recorded an interception for St. Francis in the opening stanza. Joseph Dayritt ran in a pair of scores in the second, giving them a 13-0 lead going into halftime.  

Greenfield began chipping away at the deficit when Chris Morris scored a TD in the third quarter. 

In the fourth, Coy Jordan sprinted down the field for a 20-yard touchdown for the Sharks. DaRosa-Fonseca converted the 2-point attempt which gave them a bit of some cushion. 

But the Bruins came storming back. It started with Morris’ second touchdown of the evening, followed by another rushing TD that tied the game at 21-all.

In overtime, DaRosa-Fonseca scored the go-ahead touchdown from five yards out on fourth down.

Next up, St. Francis (2-1) plays at Harbor (1-1) on Sept. 19 at 7:30pm. 

Aptos 25, at Watsonville 0: The Mariners (2-1) recorded their first shutout of the season following a non-league win against the Wildcatz on Friday evening. 

Aptos forced three turnovers—two interceptions and one fumble—in the second half.

Ryan Solorio returned the opening kickoff to start the second half for a 70-yard touchdown that extended the Mariners lead at 13-0. Nate Garcia and Deric Moren each scored a rushing touchdown in the second half.

Up next, Aptos (2-1) hosts Seaside (0-2) on Sept. 19 at 7:30pm. Watsonville (1-2) plays at Pajaro Valley (1-2) in the annual Belgard Kup game Sept. 21 at 12:30pm.   

Carlmont 48, at Monte Vista Christian 28: Mustangs receiver Nico Downie broke a pair of school records in Friday night’s non-league loss to the Scots. 

Downie is MVC’s new all-time leader in career receiving yards with 2,238 and touchdown receptions (23). He surpassed Matt Griffin’s career mark of 1,992 yards receiving and Austin Daich’s record of 22 receiving touchdowns. 

Downie finished with 261 yards receiving and two touchdowns on 12 receptions in Friday’s loss to Carlmont. Fellow teammate Nate Collins had six receptions for 102 yards and one TD, while Max Torres had three receptions for 33 yards and one touchdown.

MVC quarterback Dom Pierini completed 27-of-39 pass attempts for 423 yards, four touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

On defense, Rykin Resurreccion led the Mustangs with 13 tackles, followed by Torres (12) and Gunner Sorensen (11). Sorensen and Boston Ashe each recorded an interception, while Dylan Rush forced and recovered a fumble. Michael Van Dierendonck had one quarterback sack. 

Up next, the Mustangs (1-2) host Alvarez (2-1) on Sept. 20 at 7:30pm. 

At Denair 44, Pajaro Valley 23: The Grizzlies fall to the Coyotes in non-league action on Friday night.

Pajaro Valley (1-2) hosts Watsonville (1-2) in the annual Belgard Kup game Sept. 21 at 12:30pm.
