St. Francis junior Robert Gomez Jr. had 25 points, including seven 3-pointers for the Sharks in their 91-43 win over King City in the teams’ Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division opener Monday evening.
Teammate senior Nash Horton had 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals, while senior Mason Borrego contributed 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.
“[It was the] first time since the season had started we’ve had a full week of just practice, and it has shown the last two games,” St. Francis head coach Robert Gomez said. “[We] shot over 50 percent from the 3-point line in both games.”
Horton also had a big night from beyond the arc, sinking five of the Sharks’ 21-of-36 3-point shot attempts.
Jacob Jimenez had nine points and four rebounds, and Isaiah Villalobos finished with seven points, four rebounds and four assists for St. Francis (10-3, 1-0), which plays at North Salinas on Wednesday at 7pm.
Girls basketball
Christopher 39, at Aptos 28: Eliya Chavez had a team-best 12 points to go along with six rebounds for the Mariners in their loss to the Cougars in non-league play Jan. 3.
Teammate Abby Sherwood had six points, seven rebounds, three blocks and three assists, while Berkeley Ashby contributed five points and 10 rebounds.
Emi Gansaver-Piltcher added five points and five rebounds for Aptos (8-5), which begins Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play at home against Scotts Valley (8-2) on Jan. 14 at 6pm.
Pajaro Valley 31, at Seaside 18: Junior Olivia Contreras had a team-best 14 points to help lift the Grizzlies past the Spartans in PCAL Cypress Division action Monday. Fellow teammate Monique Ayala chipped in six points for Pajaro Valley (3-7, 1-0), which hosts Greenfield (0-7, 0-1) in league play Friday at 7pm.
At St. Francis 61, King City 35: The Sharks begin PCAL Cypress Division play with a victory over the Mustangs on Monday night. St. Francis (8-2, 1-0) hosts Palma (7-0, 1-0) in league action Wednesday at 7pm.
At Watsonville 43, Hollister 39: Freshman Isabella Alvarez had 19 points and eight steals for the Wildcatz in their win over the Haybalers in the teams’ PCAL Gabilan Division opener on Monday night.
Fellow teammate junior Stephanie Martinez had eight points, seven rebounds and five assists, while junior Leilani Yasin contributed seven points and 14 rebounds for Watsonville.
The Wildcatz (11-2, 1-0) play at Alvarez in league action Wednesday at 7pm.

At Pacific Collegiate 6, Monte Vista Christian 1: The Mustangs fell to the Pumas in the teams’ PCAL Mission Division opener on Monday. MVC (3-4-1, 0-1) hosts Pajaro Valley (9-1, 1-0) in league play Wednesday at 5:45pm.
At Pajaro Valley 2, North Monterey County 0: Leslie Carrisoza and Valeria Acosta each had one goal for the Grizzlies in their shut out win over the Condors in the teams’ PCAL Mission Division opener Monday evening.
Pajaro Valley (9-1, 1-0) will attempt to keep its eight-game win streak alive at Monte Vista Christian (3-4-1, 0-1) in league action Wednesday at 5:45pm.
Pajaro Valley 6, Cristo Rey (San Jose) 0: Senior Valeria Acosta recorded the hat trick for the Grizzlies in their crushing win against the Lions in the She Kicks Tournament championship game Jan. 4.
Acosta’s three goals set a new program record of 61 career goals scored at Pajaro Valley. Teammates Scarlet Gomez and Leilani Vazquez each had one goal and one assist.
Carmen Estanquero had one goal and Jocelyn Juarez had two assists, while Denise Magalion had four saves for the Grizzlies.
