ALAMEDA—The man who allegedly shot and killed a Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputy before engaging in an explosive-laden crime spree in the Santa Cruz Mountains town of Ben Lomond on June 6 pleaded not guilty Thursday to a host of charges in Alameda County Court.

Steven Carrillo, 32, allegedly shot and killed Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, and injured another deputy and a California Highway Patrol before a citizen tackled him following a carjacking and held him until police arrived, Sheriff Jim Hart said.

Carrillo, an active-duty U.S. Air Force sergeant stationed at Travis Air Force Base, was reportedly part of the Boogaloo Boys, an anti-police group who hold an agreement to engage in attacks on police. He is also suspected of acting in concert with Robert Albert Justus Jr. in another attack in Oakland.

The attacks drew heavy response from dozens of agencies, including the FBI, ATF, SWAT and Federal Police, especially once the attack was linked to the shooting of two federal police officers at a federal court in Oakland that left one of them dead.

Carrillo is due back in court Dec. 11 for a setting.
