WATSONVILLE — Watsonville Police on Tuesday arrested a 17-year-old suspected gang member after he allegedly tried to toss a handgun during a chase, WPD spokeswoman Michelle Pulido said Wednesday.

According to Pulido, an officer was patrolling the area of West Front and Walker streets on a bicycle when he noticed a group of people trespassing near the Pajaro River Levee.

As the officer rode toward the group, the suspect ran through nearby agriculture fields. The officer rode after the suspect, who repeatedly grabbed his waistband, Pulido said.

At one point during the chase, the teen tossed a handgun. The officer caught up to him after the teen tripped and fell, Pulido said.

He was booked into juvenile hall.
