BIG SUR—Two people died in a fiery crash on the rugged cliffs of Big Sur early Tuesday morning, California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Jessica Madueño said.

Around 4:40 a.m. the CHP responded to a vegetation fire off Highway 1 near Lucia. Big Sur Fire confirmed the fire and reported a vehicle fully engulfed in flames approximately 300 feet down a cliff.

Once firefighters reached the wreckage and doused the flames, they discovered a body inside the vehicle. Monterey County Search and Rescue also responded and recovered that victim and another body inside the car.

The Monterey County Coroner’s Office has yet to identify the victims, Madueño said.

The vehicle was a rental 2018 Chevrolet Camaro. The color remains unknown due to the severity of the fire.

The cause of the initial crash is still under investigation, Madueño said.
