The California Highway Patrol is reminding the public to remember laws governing motorized bicycles after a child suffered minor injuries recently when two of the bikes collided on Soquel Drive near Capitola.
Both riders were minors, the CHP said.
The CHP defines a motorized bicycle as a two-or-three-wheeled device capable of speeds up to 30 mph on level ground and equipped with fully operative pedals for human propulsion.
The legal requirements to operate a motorized bicycle include:
• Possess a driver’s license with a valid M2 endorsement, which allows the operation of a two-wheeled vehicle.
•Wear a DOT-compliant helmet.
• May ride in a bicycle lane if authorized by the local authority/ordinance.
• Obey all rules of the road.
• Not to be operated on sidewalks/crosswalks.
“We’ve seen a worrying spike in E-bike, E-motorcycle, and motorized bicycle crashes recently,” said CHP officer Israel Murillo. “We’re urging parents to do thorough research before purchasing an E-bike for their child.”

“• Possess a driver’s license with a valid M2 endorsement, which allows the operation of a two-wheeled vehicle.”
Different classes. Typically no license is needed on ebikes which are limited to 20mph throttle only or 28mph pedal assist mode (pedaling of course).
As far as the accident goes, I’ve seen several kids riding wheelies around town while I am out on my own ebile. I would not be surprised if the collision was the result of such recklessness?
