WATSONVILLE — Two people were transported by air ambulance Saturday after the plane they were flying crashed on the runway near Monterey Bay Academy.

According to Cal Fire, multiple agencies responded to report of a downed aircraft on a landing strip near San Andreas Road at McQuaide Drive at about 10:35 a.m. between Watsonville and La Selva Beach.

Officials said that a female pilot was attempting to land at a rustic airstrip at Monterey Bay Academy and, because of recent heavy rains, the tires of the plane sunk in the mud and the craft went nose down in the soil.

The pilot and her male passenger suffered serious injuries. They were both flown by CALSTAR air ambulances to an out-of-county trauma center, said Watsonville Fire Capt. Rick Pettigrew.

The incident is still under investigation.
