Our democracy thrives when everyone, regardless of citizenship status, has the opportunity to engage in their community. Recent years have made it clear that the notion of a universal path to citizenship is a myth, and there are intentional political efforts to keep certain communities unrepresented and invisible.
It is quite disappointing to see two Watsonville City Council members oppose Measure V, especially after claiming that the current system already provides fair representation.
If that were true, they would have simply upheld the city council’s majority decision in supporting Measure V.
Instead, the opposition relies on dog whistle and fear mongering politics, aiming to preserve power structures that exclude, rather than include, the very people they govern.
As a social service organization dedicated to building bridges, fostering community, and ensuring active communal engagement is a cornerstone to communal wellbeing, we urge you to Vote Yes on Measure V.
We ask you to look at the invaluable contributions of DACA recipients and undocumented Americans across this nation who continue to contribute positively to our daily lives. We shouldn’t judge a person’s commitment to their community based on
financial or legal hurdles in a wrought and bureaucratic system that very few people can successfully navigate.
Join us in creating a bright, more inclusive future for our community by increasing representation on commissions to reflect the true diversity of Watsonville. Vote Yes on
Measure V.
You want to vote, become a citizen
Agree absolutely.
If you want to serve on the city council or any commission, do the work to become a citizen first. Non citizens shouldn’t have any input on the city government. If they want to become a member who can vote on how city money is spent, do the work to become a citizen. Americans living in Mexico can’t become part of the government in Mexico and neither should people from Mexico have any power or sway over how our city, county, state or federal government is run. People with a green card, should have a limit on how long they can have a green card before they take the citizenship test. My family came legally to the US and didn’t speak a word of English. In 7 years, the became bilingual and took the citizenship test, (in English), passed it and became citizens.
I agree absolutely. Citizens have rights that non citizens do not have. If an individual in this country got here illegally they are illegal, regardless of what sort of fancy name ya wanna call it.
No worries Trump will start deporting on day one regardless
Ray
You are not entitled to anything in the USA. In reality you are a criminal if you entered this country illegally. You cannot even. vote for yourself! First and foremost work to become a citizen of the USA take the high road do the hard work. Then and only then you will have earned the right to live here under our laws. In the interim, don’t fool yourself citizens will not stand for those who want to come here and dictate policy when you don’t belong here in the first place
Dave jump in anytime we have someone who needs to understand the rules of America
Nope.
So trump can deport illegal city council members now? That would send a message to sanctuary cities in o the bat
Say his name Donald J Trump!
