MONTEREY COUNTY — The Monterey County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday chose the county’s first official flag, which features a design created by Watsonville artist Priscilla Martinez.
“I am honored and humbled to have my artwork chosen to represent Monterey County,” she wrote in a Facebook post.
Martinez’s design was chosen from 24 submissions.
Martinez is also known for designing the posters for the Watsonville Strawberry Festival and the Capitola Begonia Festival.
According to Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo, Monterey is now among 25 of California’s 58 counties that has an official flag.
“Considering Monterey County and the City of Monterey were home to the first capital of California under Spain and Mexico and the site of the California Constitutional Convention in 1849, it was long overdue with our rich history and deep California roots,” Alejo said. “It will now be a symbol of pride for our local residents and future generations.”
The flag includes farm fields, a condor and Colton Hall, all backed by the peaks of Pinnacles National Park.
