
Watsonville senior forward Diego Guillen notched five goals in the Wildcatz’s 7-2 thumping win over King City in Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division boys soccer action Friday evening.
Justin Alfaro and Damian Amador each added one goal for the ‘Catz, who remain unbeaten at 8-0-0 in league play this season.
Watsonville (13-1-1, 8-0-0), winners of 10 straight, will host Seaside (4-9-2, 2-3-2) on Feb. 3 at 5:45pm.
Harbor 2, at Aptos 0: The Mariners dropped their first Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League match of the season in a loss to the Pirates on Wednesday evening.
“Both teams battled for 80 minutes and it was a great game,” Aptos head coach Roberto Zúñiga said in a text message. “Looking forward to the next one.”
Aptos was scheduled to play at Santa Cruz on Friday, but the game was postponed due to students walking out of school to protest violence involving federal immigration officials.
Zúñiga sent the following text message to the players and their parents on Friday, “Given a ton of protests and walkouts in Santa Cruz, the game has been officially cancelled.”
Aptos (9-2-2, 3-1-1) and Santa Cruz (8-4-2, 3-1-1) are rescheduled to play Feb. 2 at 7pm.
Boys basketball
At Monte Vista Christian 62, Gonzales 51: Junior Matteo Vidal finished with a game-best 21 points in the Mustangs’ win against the Spartans in PCAL Cypress Division play Friday evening.
Vidal added six rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block, while teammate Go Kamishita tallied six points, eight rebounds, eight assists, two steals and one block.
Gabriel White contributed eight points and four rebounds, while Jeremy Silver had five points, six rebounds and a pair of assists for MVC, which improved to 7-2 in league play this season.
MVC (14-5, 7-2) plays at Seaside (3-16, 2-7) on Feb. 3 at 7pm.
Girls basketball
At Watsonville 36, Monterey 32: Stephanie Martinez had 16 points, four assists and three steals in the Wildcatz’s win over the Toreadores in PCAL Gabilan Division play Friday evening.
Teammate Itzury Vazquez added six points, while Leilani Yasin finished with nine blocks and seven rebounds for Watsonville (10-9, 5-4), which hosts Hollister (11-8, 6-3) on Feb. 3 at 7pm.
Salinas 55, at Watsonville 43: Leilani Yasin and Stephanie Martinez each recorded a double-double in the Wildcatz’s loss to the Cowboys in PCAL Gabilan Division play Wednesday night.
Yasin finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and three steals, while Martinez had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
High school football
Central Coast All-Star Game set for Saturday: The 40th Annual Central Coast High School All-Star Football Game will take place at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas on Saturday at 7pm.
Alisal head coach Francisco Estrada and Rancho San Juan head coach Andrew Zarate each will lead their own team of seniors from the tri-county (Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito) area.
Watsonville High’s Abraham Martinez, Anthony Landa, Mathew Silva, Luis Marquez Jr. and Lisandro Pantoja, along with St. Francis’ Jacob Jimenez and Coy Jordan will play Estrada.
Aptos’ Scott Catesi, Korey Callahan-Cade and Gavin McDonald, and Pajaro Valley’s Eddie Estrada and Mario Ramirez will play under Zarate.
The All-Star Committee selected Holding on to Hope Family Justice Center in Monterey County as the primary charity for the fundraiser. The winning team will receive a bonus donation for a charity of their choice.

The cost for youth athletes and cheerleaders wearing their youth football team jersey or cheer jacket is $5.
NBA G League
At Santa Cruz 108, Iowa 101: Santa Cruz Warriors forward Jacksen Moni with 22 points, 11 rebounds and four steals—all career highs—to help lift the Sea Dubs over the Wolves at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Friday night.
Teammate forward Jack Clark earned his second-straight double-double with 14 points, a game-high 16 rebounds, and five assists.
Santa Cruz two-way forward Malvey Leons secured a double-double of his own with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks, while guard Taevion Kinsey scored 21 points.
Guard Franco Miller Jr. finished the game with 16 points, nine assists, and five rebounds for Santa Cruz (9-6), which had a 62-48 lead going into halftime.
Forward Alize Johnson led the Wolves with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while two-way forward Enrique Freeman logged 19 points and nine rebounds.
Forward Nate Santos and guard Jules Bernard each scored 14 points, while guard Nojel Eastern logged 10 points off the bench for Iowa (10-7), which plays at Santa Cruz on Saturday at 7pm.
