The St. Francis Sharks cruised to an easy win to open up the Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia division season.

They did the same in Center Meet No. 2 on Oct. 4, scoring a 19-49 victory over Christopher at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy.

Riley Croghan (22 minutes, and 1.6 seconds), Camryn Ryan (22:39.3) and Angelika Castro (22:40.9) finished the 3-mile course third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Natalie Henn (25:06.4, 10th) and Peyton Croghan (25:59.7, 11th) also scored for St. Francis.

Ceiba freshman Nellie Rubio-Pintor took second overall (20:40.8) in her varsity debut. The Spartans did not field a full team.

Elizabeth Splees was Monte Vista Christian’s top finisher, taking ninth in 24:58.5. The Mustangs did not field a full team.

Mora takes 2nd – North Monterey County senior Faith Mora placed second overall in PCAL-Gabilan Center Meet No. 2 on Oct. 4 at Christmas Hill Park.

Mora completed the 3-mile course in 20:08.7.

The Condors took sixth out of eight teams with 116 points. Gilroy won the meet with 66 points.

N.M.C. sophomore Andrea Villegas was the second Condor across the finish line, taking 10th in 21:15.9.

Watsonville’s Carolina Avalos won the frosh-soph race in 21:56.

Jackie Henderson Memorial – Faith Mora’s third-place finish (19:14) helped N.M.C. take second at the inaugural Jackie Henderson Memorial on Oct. 6 in Castroville.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Sharks edge Mustang– St. Francis evened the score with Monte Vista Christian on Oct. 4, winning PCAL-Santa Lucia division Center Meet No. 2, 41-44, at Christmas Hill Park.

Sharks’ E.J. Kelly took first overall for the second center meet in a row, and teammate Patrick McCarthy made his league debut by taking second. Kelly completed the 3-mile course in 17:00, and McCarthy followed in 17:18.

M.V.C.’s big three of David Wang (17:50), Andrew Bachman (18:00) and Justin Lomeli (18:04) took third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Rafael Gomez (11th, 19:11) and Jordan Olhava (21st, 20:23) also scored for the Mustangs.

St. Francis’ Julian Vargas (9th, 18:50), Paul Kane (14th, 19:28) and Erik Kane (15th, 19:28) swung the meet in favor of the Sharks.

Jarrod Garcia was Ceiba’s top finisher. He finished 34th in 22:56.

N.M.C. takes 7th – N.M.C. took seventh in PCAL-Gabilan Center Meet No. 2 at Christmas Hill Park on Oct. 4.

Jiovanni Garcia was the Condors top finisher, completing the 3-mile course in 17:43. N.M.C. totaled 184 points.

Alisal won the meet with 46 points.

Jackie Henderson Memorial – N.M.C.’s Jiovanni Garcia took ninth (17:03) at the inaugural Jackie Henderson Memorial on Oct. 6 in Castroville.

Crystal Spring Invite – St. Francis senior E.J. Kelly took 22nd in the varsity race at the Crystal Springs Invitational in Belmont on Oct. 6.

Kelly finished the 2.95-mile course in 16:41.33. Teammate Patrick McCarthy took 30th in 17:02.68.

The Sharks finished 14th as a team.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Gonzales 3, Pajaro Valley 2 – Julie Che had 19 kills, five digs and seven aces in the Grizzlies’ 20-25, 25-13, 25-20, 21-25, 15-13 loss on Tuesday in PCAL-Cypress division play.

Kyla Salazar had 42 assists, and Isabella Langarcia added 15 kills.

Pajaro Valley was fresh off a 25-23, 25-17, 25-14 win over N.M.C. on Oct. 4. Che had 18 kills in the win, and Kayla Salazar finished with 27 assists, four kills and six aces.

Salinas 3, MVC 1 – Allie Tillery’s 14 kills and six blocks helped M.V.C. keep pace with Salinas in Tuesday night’s PCAL-Gabilan loss. The scores were 25-15, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22.

Aleah Rafat had nine kills and two blocks, while Malou Oostveen and Sam Albin each recorded five kills and two blocks.

St. Francis 3, Pacific Grove 2 – St. Francis notched its first PCAL-Mission division win of the year on Tuesday, beating Pacific Grove 25-17, 19-25, 25-20, 19-25, 16-14.

Soquel 3, Aptos 2 – Aptos’ hopes of a sixth straight Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League championship took a hit with Tuesday night’s 14-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 15-10 loss.

The loss dropped Aptos to 5-2 in SCCAL play. Soquel, meanwhile, pushed its record to 8-0.

Jillian Rodriguez had 21 kills, 11 digs and two aces, and Peyton Dueck added 18 kills and 14 digs.

Chloe Manor totaled 47 assists, six digs, three aces and two kills.

GIRLS TENNIS

Alvarez 5, St. Francis 2 – Gabi Gutierrez won her eighth straight PCAL-Mission division match on Tuesday, scoring a 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles.

Sophia Fryn also picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win in No. 2 singles for St. Francis, which scored a 4-3 win over Notre Dame-Salinas on Oct. 4.

Gutierrez (6-0, 6-0) and Sophia Fryn (6-0, 6-1) notched singles wins on Oct. 4, while the doubles teams of Santana Rigor and Marisa Vasquez (2-6, 7-5, 10-5) and Emily Garcia and Raquel Moreno (6-1, 6-6, 7-6) also won.

M.V.C. 4, Alisal 3 – Hannah Synder (6-1, 6-2), Kate Ji (6-4, 7-5) and Kendall Fournier (6-2, 6-3) all notched wins in singles to lead M.V.C. over Alisal in PCAL-Mission play on Tuesday.

Soquel 17, Aptos 4 – Matthew Morse scored three goals and Beck Escalante also scored in Aptos’ PCAL-Gabilan loss on Tuesday night.

Morse also scored four goals in Aptos’ 9-5 loss to Santa Cruz on Oct. 4.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Soquel 19, Aptos 2 – Aptos suffered its first PCAL-Gabilan setback since mid-September on Tuesday.

Aptos had won five straight league games before falling to league-leading Soquel. It’s last win was an 11-6 victory over Santa Cruz on Oct. 4.

Kelly Taylor scored five goals against Santa Cruz, while Jordan Wagner added two goals, five steals and two assists, and Kristen Malone chipped in one goal, five steals and three assists.

MEN’S JC SOCCER

Foothill 5, Cabrillo 1 – Jackson Henderson scored Cabrillo College’s lone goal in Tuesday’s Coast Conference crossover loss at Carl Conelly Stadium in Aptos. 

Talbot Heinz made two saves and Edi Magdaleno made three for Cabrillo (1-6-4, 1-3-1), which plays at Gavilan College tonight at 4 p.m.

WOMEN’S JC VOLLEYBALL

Cabrillo 3, San Mateo 2 – The Cabrillo College Seahawks were pushed to their limits in a 24-26, 18-25, 25-17, 25-10, 15-12 Coast Conference North division win on Wednesday.

Cabrillo improved to 15-2 overall and 5-0 in conference action, but not before San Mateo (15-5, 2-1) gave it a scare.

Cabrillo, which has won the conference title in 11 straight seasons, will face another test tonight at home against Hartnell College (17-2, 3-0) at 6:30 p.m.
