The Monterey Bay region is expected to see a wet start to the new year, with several days of rain, fog and an elevated risk of coastal flooding affecting low-lying areas near Watsonville through the weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect from 5am Wednesday through 2pm Sunday for the Monterey Bay shoreline, the Pacific Coast and tidal waterways.

Forecasters say up to 1.8 feet of inundation is possible in coastal and tidal areas.

In the Watsonville area, that includes low-lying neighborhoods near the Pajaro River, Corralitos Creek and Salsipuedes Creek, as well as beach access points along Sunset State Beach.

Minor flooding is possible near Beach Road, San Andreas Road, West Beach Street and the Highway 1 corridor, particularly during peak high tides. Flooding could affect parking lots, parks and roadways, though only isolated road closures are anticipated.

High tides are expected to run 1.5 to 1.8 feet above normal through Sunday, with peak tides generally occurring during the late morning hours. About half a foot of storm surge is expected to add to the flooding risk.

Public safety officials urge caution for residents in flood-prone coastal and river areas, including agricultural zones near the Pajaro River. Motorists should be prepared for reduced visibility during morning commutes due to fog, especially along Highway 1 and Highway 152.

Rain chances increase Wednesday, with showers likely after mid-morning. Rain is expected to continue into New Year’s Day, with additional showers Thursday night through Saturday before tapering to a chance of rain Sunday.
