WATSONVILLE—A 61-year-old woman was killed on Dec. 3 while crossing the street at the intersection of Rodriguez and West Beach streets in downtown Watsonville.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Ashley Keehn identified the victim as Joan Alameda of Watsonville.

Watsonville Police Department Sgt. Mike Ridgeway said Alameda died at the scene after she was struck and pinned beneath a white Ford F250 pickup while using a crosswalk. He said Alameda was walking west across Rodriguez Street around 3:15pm when the truck was attempting a left turn from West Beach Street onto Rodriguez Street.

Ridgway added that the driver of the truck stopped and cooperated with police. Ridgway said alcohol and/or drugs did not appear to play a role in the incident.

The surrounding streets were shut down at the start of the afternoon commute creating a traffic logjam. Crowds of bystanders gathered in the area as emergency responders worked the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
