RIO DEL MAR — A San Jose woman was arrested Thursday after ramming a California State Parks ranger’s vehicle with her car and then leading police on a short pursuit.
According to Santa Cruz Sheriff Sgt. Dee Baldwin, Shelly Vickers had an unrestrained child in the vehicle during the chase.
Vickers was charged with resisting arrest, felony evasion, felony child cruelty, possession of drug paraphernalia and hit and run. She was released from Santa Cruz County Jail after posting $15,000 bail, jail records showed.
According to Baldwin, a ranger tried to talk to Vickers after he saw her driving erratically near the Rio Del Mar Esplanade at about 7 p.m.
Vickers reversed her car and ran into the State Park Ranger’s patrol car, Baldwin said.
A Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputy who was driving in the area saw Vickers speed off after hitting the ranger’s car and tried to pull her over.
Vickers refused to stop, and led deputies on a pursuit that ended when she crashed into a fence on the 300 block of Rio Del Mar Boulevard. The crash deployed the vehicle’s airbags, and Vickers continued trying to drive away, Baldwin said.
Deputies safely removed the child, who was unharmed, from the vehicle.
According to Baldwin, Vickers resisted deputies by kicking and trying to bite them while they arrested her.
There were no injuries reported.
