Construction continues on a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing of Highway 1 at Chanticleer Avenue in Santa Cruz as part of the Highway 1 Corridor Project.
Plans call for construction of north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements on Highway 1 between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive interchanges.
The auxiliary lanes will connect the on-ramps with the next off-ramp, thus extending the weaving and merging distance between the ramps. The goal is to improve traffic operations, and reduce cut-through traffic diverting to area streets and neighborhoods.
Steel and wood framing is now being built across Highway 1 for the overcrossing that will provide an alternative route for bicyclists and pedestrians that typically use the Soquel or 41st interchanges to cross Highway 1. The overcrossing will be lighted, 12- to 14-feet wide, and will feature aesthetic elements consistent with the visual character of the corridor and surrounding community.
Granite Construction of Watsonville is the contractor for the $29 million project that is expected to be completed in late 2025.
