CORRALITOS — At a busy intersection in Corralitos stands a white and green cabinet that a group of six Girl Scouts hope will be their legacy to their community.
The community food pantry in front of Hansen’s Feed & Pet Supply was the girls’ final project allowing them to earn the Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve.
The girls said they wanted something that could help low-income residents, while giving others a convenient way to help their neighbors.
They are hoping that passersby will place non-perishable food items in the box, for both people and pets.
“You can give or take,” said Alice Tinker. “If people are in need of things, they can just take them.”
The girls were responsible for nearly every aspect of the project, from concept to cardboard prototypes to most of the construction.
Charlotte Ryan said that the group also chose the project for its simplicity, rejecting among other things placing a birdbath on top of the pantry.
As the girls were putting the finishing touches on the pantry on Thursday, several people were already coming by to stock it with food.
“It means a lot to me,” said Lily Vaccaro. “I think it’s good we’re helping the community, and I hope we can do more in the future.”

The Girl Scout Troop 10420 food pantry is located in front of Hansen’s Feed & Pet Supply at 2901 Freedom Blvd. The community is invited to bring non-perishable food items for both people and pets.
