APTOS — A four-month-old boy was seriously injured Saturday on Highway 1 in a two-vehicle crash.

California Highway Patrol officer Sam Courtney said a 33-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman from Santa Clara had pulled over onto the northbound shoulder of Highway 1 south of Larkin Valley in their 2015 Hyundai Tucson to deal with their baby boy.

Around 6:30 p.m., Abel Jacobo of Santa Cruz was driving in a 1998 Toyota Sienna northbound on Highway 1 south of Larkin Valley Road while intoxicated, Courtney said.

Jacobo ended up driving on the shoulder of the freeway and failed to see that a vehicle was stopped ahead of him, according to Courtney. That’s when Jacobo’s Toyota slammed into the back of the stopped Hyundai.

The baby suffered major injuries, Courtney said, as a result of the collision and was flown by air ambulance to an out-of-county trauma center.

Jacobo was arrested at the scene and later booked into the Santa Cruz County jail for felony DUI, driving on a suspended driver’s license and violation of court DUI probation terms.
