SANTA CRUZ COUNTY—Though there is far less traffic nowadays with the stay-at-home order, the California Highway Patrol is reminding people it doesn’t mean there are now fewer laws.

“We are experiencing people traveling at higher speeds, but we are out there patrolling,” said CHP officer Julieta Trenado. “Our mission hasn’t changed. So our officers are running a lot of speed details at various locations.”

Trenado said the Santa Cruz CHP office remains fully staffed during the Covid-19 pandemic and that officers are maintaining regular duties, responding to collisions, assisting other law agencies, traffic control and other regular calls for service.

“Traveling at higher speeds can lead to more serious injuries,” Trenado said. “Rules of the road have not changed…The CHP is still watching.”

The CHP has also stationed a flashing speed monitor sign around the county to let drivers know their speed.

Additionally, Trenado said motorists that do get pulled over do not have to wear a mask or gloves and that officers typically approach the passenger side of the vehicle while maintaining six feet social distance.

“Stay in your car if you get pulled over,” Trenado said. “The officer will instruct you from there. Please continue to obey all laws.”
