A Watsonville man was shot during an altercation late Sunday night near 7th and Hyde streets in Watsonville.

Watsonville Police spokeswoman Michelle Pulido said a dispute between two men quickly escalated into a shooting, and then led to the suspect’s arrest in less than 24 hours.

On Sunday night just before 9pm, Watsonville police found a victim of a shooting in the area of the 100 block of Seneca Court. The 46-year-old victim was taken to an out-of-county trauma center and is expected to live.

Detectives learned that the suspected shooter was 41-year-old Jose Fernandez.

WPD detectives, with the help from the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team, served a search warrant on the 100 block of West Fifth Street Monday morning. Fernandez was taken into custody and booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on attempted murder charges.

He was not listed as being in custody Monday night, jail records showed.
