Aptos sophomore Scarlett Stateler was a two-time winner for the Mariners at the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Track and Field Championship at Aptos High on May 3.  

Stateler, who is also a standout on the girls’ soccer team, victorious in the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet, 6 inches and won the shot put with a throw of 26-10, helping the Mariners capture their second consecutive league title.

Aptos finished with a team score of 170 points, followed by Santa Cruz (137) in second, San Lorenzo Valley (71) in third, Scotts Valley (71) in fourth and Soquel (43) in fifth.

Aptos senior Siena Black (26-1) placed third in the shot put, while teammate sophomore Ellie Marta won the discus with a toss of 96 feet and Stateler (77-6) placed third.

Aptos junior Ella Boyes won the 300 meters hurdles race in 46.03 seconds, beating San Lorenzo Valley seniors Naomi Seastrom (46.03) in second and Angelica Petrov (19.63) in third. Seastrom won the 100 hurdles in 17.06, followed by Santa Cruz freshman Haisley Flanagan (18.26) in second and Petrov (19.63) in third. 

Santa Cruz sophomore Joy Roberts won the 200 meters in 25.65 seconds, beating Aptos sophomore Bella Hartnett (26.18) in second and senior Izzy Graff (26.82) in third. Roberts also won the 100 meter dash in 12.71. 

Aptos junior Maya Schiro placed second in the 3200 in 11:33.45 and third in the 1600 in 5:18.68.

Scotts Valley junior Ava Decleve (57.57) won the 400, followed by Hartnett (59.10) in second and Scotts Valley junior Dylan Turzak (1:00.99) in third. Decleve also placed second in the 800 in 2:18.93.

SLV senior Orea Pollock won the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, while Graff won the long jump with a leap of 15-8 1/2.

PCAL Mission

Watsonville senior Katelynn Ruiz was victorious in both the 1600- and 3200-meters at the Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division Track and Field Championship at Rancho San Juan High School on May 2.

The Wildcatz’s standout runner won the 3200 in 11 minutes, 55.56 seconds, followed by teammate junior Azucena Sandoval (12:02.34) in second and Rancho San Juan senior Gariela Cardenas (12:17) in third. 

Ruiz (5:28.03) won the 1600 in photo finish fashion, slightly beating Rancho San Juan senior Eldi Covarrubias (5:29.48) in second and Monterey freshman Lucy Crawford (5:37.37) in third.

Watsonville senior Jocelyn Guzman won the 300 hurdles in 48.90 seconds and placed third in the 100 hurdles in 18.43. 

The ‘Catz placed fourth as a team with a score of 69 points, finishing behind Rancho San Juan (83) in third, Monterey (101) in second and this year’s Mission Division champion Stevenson (115.6).

Next up, the PCAL Masters Meet at King City High on Friday starting at 4pm.  

PCAL Cypress 

Monte Vista Christian freshman Anna Conca won both the 800 and 1600 races to help lead the Mustangs to a team title at the PCAL Cypress Division Championship at Pacific Grove High on May 2.

In the 1600, Conca (5:20.33) finished ahead of teammates senior Kylie Brunelli (5:22.49) in second, sophomore Finley Castro (5:26.82) in third and senior Hannah Woodford (5:57) in fourth.

Conca (2:30.89) and Woodford (2:41.15) had a 1-2 finish in the 800, while Brunelli (12:10.45) was victorious in the 3200 for MVC, which finished with a team score of 178 points. Pacific Grove (107) took second, followed by North Salinas (79) in third. 

North Salinas sophomore track star Clara Adams was victorious in three events, winning the 100 in 12.22 seconds, the 200 (25.86) and the 400 (1:02.72). 

MVC senior Madison Bandy placed second in both the 100 meter (13.23) and 200 (27.20), while Castro (1:04.93) and teammate sophomore Chloe Shaw (1:08.22) took second and third, respectively, in the 400.

Trinity Christian junior Ally Juarez-Gonzales won the 100 meter hurdles in 18.04, edging MVC’s freshmen Carley Heitzenrater (18.06) in second and Charley Moggia (18.70) in third. 

Juarez-Gonzales also won the 300 hurdles, beating MVC freshman Norah Rondia (53.27) in second and Heitzenrater (54.51) in third.

MVC’s 4×100 relay team—Charley Moggia, Kylie Fitzpatrick, Norah Rondia, Madison Bandy—won its race in 52.61, while the 4×400 relay team—Finley Castro, Carly Heitzenrater, Chloe Shaw, Anna Conca—won in 4:29.31.

MVC senior Syree Delfin won the pole vault with a jump of 8 feet, 6 inches, beating teammates freshmen Gabby Telles (8-0) in second and Eleanor Crane (7-6) in third. 

PCAL Santa Lucia 

St. Francis junior Orradre won three events—100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and triple jump—at the PCAL Santa Lucia Division Championship at Greenfield High on May 2. 

The Sharks’ standout athlete crossed the finish line in 17.38 seconds to capture the 100 hurdles, beating Anzar sophomore Zoe McDougall (18.90) in second and Greenfield junior Marlenne Hernandez (19.79) in third. 

In the 300 hurdles, Orradre (52.66) zipped past Hernandez (55.44) in second and Anzar senior Angelina Tran (55.85) in third. 

Orradre won the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, 6 inches, while teammate senior Carley Anderson (31-10) placed third. St. Francis junior Julie Lopez (13-5 1/2) took third in the long jump, while teammate junior Mia McClendon (1:06.98) placed third in the 400.

St. Francis junior Camila Suarez won the discus with a toss of 75 feet, 8 inches, and took second in the shot put with a throw of 22-4. Pajaro Valley senior Jocelyn Jimenez-Rincon placed third in both the discus (70-10) and shot put (22-4).

Pajaro Valley’s 4×400 relay team—Emily Lopez, Kylie Moore, Alyssa Moore, Liz Zamora—won their race in 4:36.41. Lopez placed second in the 800 (2:46.72) and 1600 (6:04.72) just behind Iris Paten of Pacific Collegiate, who won both events in 2:29.76 and 5:25.78, respectively.
