Robb Mayeda rings the Peace Bell at the Watsonville Buddhist Temple on Wednesday during a Hiroshima/Nagasaki Memorial ceremony.

The gathering pays respect to those that perished in the U.S. atomic bomb attacks on the two Japanese cities Aug. 6 during World War II 80 years ago.

While 110,000 died instantly in the attacks, hundreds of thousands died later from injuries and radiation-related illnesses.

Rev. Jay Shinseki said he hoped the meeting would, “deepen our understanding of life and to realize how our departed ones continue to influence our lives. It is important that we remember it so that we, who are still here, can prevent this from ever happening again.”
