A Felton woman died early Saturday morning in a head-on crash on Highway 9 north of Felton.

The California Highway Patrol said the 80-year-old woman was driving a red 1967 Volkswagen Beetle northbound on Hwy 9 at an undetermined speed around 8:20am.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old Santa Cruz woman was driving a silver 2006 Toyota Sequoia southbound on Hwy 9, north of the Volkswagen, also at an undetermined speed.

For unknown reasons both vehicles collided head-on near Brackney Road, about midway between Ben Lomond and Felton.

The driver of the Volkswagen suffered major injuries, the CHP said, and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, despite life-saving efforts. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.

The cause of the collision is under investigation. It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were factors.
