On Nov. 16, Pajaro Valley Unified School District, in partnership with Free Guitars 4 Kids (FG4K) and Arts Council Santa Cruz County’s Mariposa Arts program, celebrated with 120 students who received their own guitars.

The event at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s The Grove Ballroom showcased PVUSD’s commitment to expanding access to the arts and enriching experiences across the Pajaro Valley, district officials said.

The students received not only guitars but also mentorship, arts learning opportunities, and a creative space that builds both confidence and academic success.

“Music has the power to change a child’s life,” said PVUSD Superintendent Heather Contreras. “When our students receive their first guitar, they’re not just receiving an instrument, they’re receiving affirmation that their voice, their creativity, and their dreams matter. We are deeply grateful to Free Guitars 4 Kids and our arts partners for investing in the joy and potential of our children.”

Since the program began in Santa Cruz County, more than 240 guitars have been placed in the hands of local students. With continued expansion, the initiative aims to reach more than 1,200 students annually across all 21 county schools.
