WATSONVILLE — Jose Saldaña Vasquez died peacefully surrounded by his family at his Watsonville home on Saturday, July 22, 2017. He was 95.
Mr. Saldaña Vasquez was born to Bartolo Saldaña and Cruz Vasquez in Guanajuato, Mexico on April 14, 1922. He was a resident of this community for 70 years. Before retiring he worked at West Coast Farms as a lettuce picker for 50 years. He was a hard worker always providing for his family.
He had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening. He was fond of having barbecues and socializing with his family and friends. He also enjoyed the sport of boxing.
Mr. Saldaña Vasquez is survived by five sons, Roberto, Arnulfo, Isidro, Jaime, and Albert Saldaña; two daughters, Clemencia Garcia and Gloria Jimenez; 34 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Salud Saldaña (2002); son, Mario; and daughter, Antonia Saldaña.
Visitation will be held at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel on Monday, July 31 from 3-9 p.m. with the rosary recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at St Patrick’s Church, Tuesday, Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Valley Public Cemetery.
Family requests donations be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz in lieu of flowers.
