Pajaro church hosting summer festival
PAJARO — Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 100 Salinas Road in Pajaro, will hold its annual summer festival on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The alcohol-free event will feature food booths, live music, carnival games and a raffle for $10,000. Raffle tickets are available for purchase the day of the event.
Free parking will be available at Pajaro Middle School, 250 Salinas Road.

Follies holding pancake breakfast
SANTA CRUZ — A benefit pancake breakfast will be held from 8:30 a.m.-noon Sunday at 222 Market St. in Santa Cruz.
Cost of the breakfast is $7 for adults, $3 for children under age 10. Also, take a look in “Grannie’s Attic” for household items and small gifts.
Proceeds will benefit Santa Cruz Follies, a local performing arts group for “over 50” Santa Cruz County citizens.

Former county assessor dies
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — The County of Santa Cruz announced that Gary Hazelton, a former Assessor-Recorder who served the residents of Santa Cruz County for 34 years, died suddenly on Monday. He was 69.
Hazelton began working for the county in 1975. In 1988, he was promoted to Division Director of the Assessor’s Office overseeing property valuations. In 2002, he ran unopposed for County Assessor, and in 2004 assumed the title of Assessor-Recorder, overseeing a successful merger of the two departments.
Hazelton won reelection in 2006 before announcing his retirement in 2009.
“Gary was a mentor and a friend,” County Assessor-Recorder Sean Saldavia said. “The imprint he left on this office is lasting, and we’re all striving to meet the standards he set. Our condolences go out to his family. He will be missed.”
The County Assessor locates, maintains ownership records and sets valuations for all taxable property in the county. The Recorder’s Office maintains records such as birth, marriage and death certificates.
Hazelton is survived by his wife, Jill, three children and 10 grandchildren.
