MARINA — One person was killed Monday morning when the plane they were flying crashed on the runway at Marina Municipal Airport, Marina Fire Chief Doug McCoun said.

According to McCoun, witnesses described the plane taking off at a steep angle before stalling and crashing at about 10:55 a.m.

The small plane – a single-engine Mooney M20 – burst into flames upon impact.

There were no passengers aboard.

Marina Airport was closed during the investigation.

McCoun said that the fire burned away much of the plane, leaving the wings, the tail section and the engine.

“There was not a lot there,” he said. “It was pretty demolished.”

It was unclear Monday where the plane was based. Calls to Marina Airport, Marina Police Department and Monterey County Sheriff’s Office were not returned as of press time.
