A week after breaking the school record in the 800-meter run, Watsonville High junior Daniela Salazar lowered her record time to 2 minutes, 17.58 seconds and took fourth place at the prestigious 38th annual CCS Top 8 track and field classic at Los Gatos High on Saturday.

Her teammate, junior Jose Villanueva, also set a personal best, leaping 42 feet, 11 inches in the triple jump to take sixth place among some of the top athletes from around the Central Coast Section.

Monte Vista Christian freshman Delaney Ezeji-Okoye placed eighth in the pole vault, clearing 10-6.

Aptos High had five athletes compete at Top 8: freshman Brynn Mitchell, juniors Sofia Natividad and Jorge Benitez and seniors Annika McBride and Danner Pardue.
Mitchell placed the highest of all five, taking ninth in the triple jump with a leap of 35-5.75.

Pardue and Benitez both took 12th in their respective races. Pardue ran the 100 in 11.19 and Benitez completed in the 1,600 in 4:26.17.

Natividad (20th, 5:22.50) and McBride (25th, 5:26.07) each ran the 1,600.

St. Francis High senior Braxton Rico took 12th in the 800 (1:59.14) and his junior teammate, Samantha Bellucci, was 18th in the triple jump (33-9).

North Monterey County High’s Ryan Orlando was sixth in the high jump (5-10). Fellow Condors Sarah Delgado was 26th in the 800 (2:30.41) and Jocelyn Cazarez took 10th in the discus (102-10).

HS BASEBALL

• Watsonville 10, NMC 0 – Gio Gonzalez tossed his second no-hitter of the season in Watsonville High’s 10-0, five-inning win over North Monterey County High on Friday night.

James Gomez Jr. was 2-for-3 with two scored runs and a double for Watsonville (12-7, 8-3), which travels to Seaside High today at 4 p.m.

JoJo Vargas had two RBIs and Ryan Rivera scored twice.

• St. Francis 21, Harbor 0 – The St. Francis High Sharks throttled the Harbor High Pirates 21-0 on Friday to improve to 3-2 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play.
Chase Watkins and Tanner Putnins combined to throw a one-hitter on the mound.

Watkins struck out 15 batters and allowed no walks in six innings.

Watkins also helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and two scored runs.

Ruben Ibarra was also 2-for-5 with a doubled and three scored runs. Derric Estrada-Haro finished 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three scored runs, while Mario Velasquez went 2-for-4 with a doubled, three RBIs and a scored run.

St. Francis hosts Santa Cruz High today at 4 p.m.

• Pajaro Valley 5, Marina 4 – The Pajaro Valley High Grizzlies beat the Marina High Mariners, 5-4, on Friday in non-league play to notch their second straight win.

Davian Quintana was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two scored runs. John Ramos was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Lorenzo Torres scored the winning run in the seventh inning and Rocky Ramirez doubled.

HS SOFTBALL

• NMC 14, MVC 11 – The North Monterey County High Condors held off Monte Vista Christian’s seventh-inning rally to beat the Mustangs 14-11 on Friday in Monterey Bay League Pacific division action.

Michaela Galli was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two scored runs. Victoria Cardoza, Amber Duplissie and Alivia Peters each knocked in three runs for the Condors (11-5, 5-1), which travel to Seaside High on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Duplissie and Peters each hit a home run.

Gianni Vanni was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a scored run. Holly Hollingsworth was 3-for-4 with five RBIs, two scored runs and a home run.

MVC (8-7-1, 2-3) play at Alvarez High on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

JC BASEBALL
• Cabrillo 3, Canada 2 – The Cabrillo College Seahawks edged Canada College, 3-2, on Saturday in Coast Conference Pacific division action on the road.

The Seahawks (26-11, 12-3) had four pitchers see the mound. Alex Trautner picked up the win in a relief effort, going four inning and allowed two hits, an earned run and one walk with two strike outs.

Clayton Andrews was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Digger Gugale also drove in a run. Jarius Richards scored twice.

Cabrillo returns to action today against Ohlone College at home at 2:30 p.m.
