WATSONVILLE — Part of Main Street in downtown Watsonville was blocked off Tuesday morning to make way for an annual holiday tradition.
A large, “Aptos Blue” redwood was unveiled lying across a flatbed trailer, having taken a journey from Bonfante Gardens in Gilroy in the early morning. Watsonville’s Auto Care Towing was on hand to help get the tree off the truck and situated into the plaza.
Ben Heistein, assistant director of the City of Watsonville Parks and Community Services department, was also present, along with a number of Public Works employees to assist with the move.

“We’re continuing with the tradition of the ‘living tree,’” Heistein said, explaining that the tree had been grown especially for the occasion.
City workers will be helping to deck out the plaza gradually in the next few weeks. The tree itself will be decorated on Nov. 14 and 15, and the first weekend of December, the Multicultural Festival and Tree Lighting, as well as the return of Snow Day, will take place.
