WATSONVILLE — To cap off a year of sesquicentennial festivities, Watsonville city officials filled a time capsule with present-day items Tuesday that will be opened in 25 years.

Deputy City Manager Tamara Vides said various city departments, organizations and schools were invited to place an item in the capsule. Items included badges from the police and fire departments, photos, writings from students and other memorabilia.

In addition, two local businesses also celebrating their 150th anniversary this year, Pajaronian and S. Martinelli & Co., placed items in the capsule.

The capsule will be on display in the Civic Plaza building, where it will wait to be opened in 2043 when Watsonville celebrates its 175th anniversary.

Vides called 2018 a “year to remember,” with various special events taking place to celebrate the sesquicentennial.

“We created community,” she said. “We re-engaged many residents and businesses with what the city is doing. We celebrated our past, we honored our present and we created memories for future generations. It definitely brought a special light to our town.”
