The Watsonville High girls’ flag football team kicked off the regular season in dominant fashion following a 33-0 win over Marina High at the newly renamed Hedgpeth Stadium-Geiser Field in Watsonville on Aug. 29.
Wildcatz head coach Zach Cook said in a text message that the offense was nearly flawless, posting 229 total yards with zero turnovers across eight drives.
Freshman quarterback Zoe Saldana led the charge, completing 13 of 20 pass attempts for 118 yards and two touchdowns, while junior quarterback Aaliyah Arellano contributed 45 passing yards and two additional scores.
Junior running-back Isabella Ruiz finished with 28 yards rushing and one touchdown on three carries.
Watsonville’s defense was equally impressive. They recorded multiple sacks led by senior rusher Taylor Alves Lopez with two.
Next up, Watsonville (1-0) plays at Greenfield (0-1) on Tuesday at 6:30pm.
College football
At Chabot 80, Cabrillo 13: DeSean Gomez and Valentino Boozer each had one touchdown in the Seahawks’ loss to the Gladiators in non-conference play Aug. 29.
Cabrillo starting quarterback Mario Cosma completed 7 of 11 pass attempts for 80 yards and one interception, while teammate Belay Brummel tossed for 36 yards and a pair of interceptions.
On defense, Anthony Pozzetti recorded one interception and six solo tackles for Cabrillo (0-1), which hosts Feather River (0-1) on Saturday at 1pm.
Girls volleyball
Monte Vista Christian 3, Scotts Valley 2: The Mustangs got the fall campaign off on the right “hoof” by defeating the defending Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion Falcons in five sets 25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 24-26, 15-10 in non league play Aug. 28.
Jessie Ingram had 13 kills and 14 digs for MVC, while teammate Mayla Miller-Spahn recorded 22 assists and three aces.
Macy Freitas had 10 assists, four digs and five aces, while teammate Amani Keller tallied 11 kills and eight blocks for the Mustangs, who began the regular season in the Central Coast Section Sportsmanship Scrimmage against Aptos High on Aug. 24.
“It was a great early test of our team’s ability and mental fortitude,” said MVC head coach Hunter Zeng in an email. “We had opportunities to learn in both matches, and the experience against Aptos early in the week helped prepare us for several of the moments we needed to execute well against Scotts Valley. We’re excited for the season.”
