SAN JOSE — A man who was killed Saturday night in a collision on Highway 101 in San Jose was identified as Watsonville resident Noe Fernandez, 18.

According to California Highway Patrol officer Ross Lee, Fernandez was driving a white Honda Civic north on Highway 101 near Highway 87 when mechanical trouble forced him to pull over to the shoulder.

The Civic was struck from behind by an intoxicated driver traveling at a high rate of speed on the shoulder, Lee said.

The force of the collision spun the Civic, and threw Fernandez over the highway divider and into the exit ramp on the other side of Highway 101, Lee said.

Fernandez was pronounced dead at the scene. His passengers suffered minor injuries.

Andreas Emilio Flores-Avendano was arrested for felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. His bail was set at $250,000.
