NEW PUBLIC ART The City of Watsonville has plans to install three large mosaic sculptures in this traffic circle at Clifford Avenue and Pennsylvania Drive. (Tarmo Hannula/The Pajaronian)

Three artworks have been chosen to be installed in the traffic circle at the intersection of Clifford Avenue and Pennsylvania Drive.

City staff received an application and proposal for a new public art spearheaded by an anonymous donor. The donor, a Watsonville resident, has commissioned Community Arts and Empowerment to design and construct three free-standing stelae created by local artist Melissa Marzan, who was chosen by the donor.

The design concepts were initially sent out to residents near the roundabout via fliers for community feedback. Of six initial designs, three were chosen by the community—a bear, rabbit and an egret.

Deputy City Manager and Parks Director Nick Calubaquib said construction and installation of these art pieces would be privately funded, while the cost of the footings would be the responsibility of the City.

The mosaic artwork includes abstract designs that reflect Native American or Filipino patterns, and feature animals that once lived in the region.

Each piece will be 72 inches across by 36 inches tall and 4 inches deep and will be fabricated at the Muzzio Mosaic Arts Center in Watsonville.

If approved, these three designs will advance to the construction phase with installation set for spring of 2027.
