Betty Louise Jones died at Watsonville Community Hospital April 6, 2018.  She was 87.  Born in Compton, California, to Louis and Katherine Glavinic.  She grew up there and graduated from UCLA in 1951.

Betty Lou was a gifted educator.  Her teaching career began in Dallas, Texas, and in 1954 the family moved back to California where she taught in Compton.  She was a pioneer in teaching “Total Communication,” a program used to teach deaf and hearing-impaired children the English language.  Betty Lou taught school at Thornley School for the deaf in the Pajaro Valley for more than 25 years.  She also taught SEE or Signing Exact English to adults at Cabrillo College.  Her passion for teaching touched many children, adults, and fellow teachers throughout the years.

Betty Lou will be greatly missed by her children, Mark, Christine, and Carl Jones, and grandchildren, Grace Jones and Trevor Schwertfeger.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Early Jones, Jr.

No formal services are planned.  Contributions to the Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes or your favorite charity are preferred.  Mehl’s Colonial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
