Watsonville High sophomore Justin Alfaro scored in the Wildcatz’s 3-1 loss to Salinas High in Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division boys soccer action at Cabrillo College on a cold and rainy Friday night.
Alfaro gave Watsonville a 1-0 lead going into halftime when his shot hit the back of the net in the 28th minute.
In the second half, freshman Brandon Lopez, sophomore Erik Cortez and senior Ram Annous each notched one goal to help the Cowboys score three unanswered goals.
“I think we pressed up for a goal,” Watsonville head coach Roland Hedgpeth said. “We were trying to go for goals a lot. And their counter attacks worked.”
Watsonville had to play with 10 on field near the 75th minute mark after one of the players was given a red card for misconduct. With the loss, they drop to fifth in the Mission Division standings with a 3-4-2 record in league play.
The ‘Catz (4-6-6) plays Rancho San Juan (4-10-1, 1-6-1) on Feb. 6 at 6:45pm.
At Aptos 4, San Lorenzo Valley 0: Nami Banks scored twice in the Mariners’ victory over the Cougars in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League action Friday night.
Banks scored in the 36th and 59th minutes. Both goals were assisted by Garcia, who also scored in the first half.
Daniel Lozano capped off the scoring in the 72nd minute, while Josiah Siqueiros was credited with the assist. Goalkeeper Noah Curran had one save for Aptos (9-4-1, 4-1), which hosts Soquel on Feb. 6 at 7pm.
“Our team continues to improve and work together every game,” Aptos head coach Roberto Zuñiga said. “Commendable work by our defense in Love Granstrom, Daniel Lozano, David Sebastian Kilpatrick and Benjamin Maciel. I’m proud of the work the boys have done thus far, and we will continue to focus one game at a time.”
Girls soccer
At Aptos 3, Woodside 1: Junior Alexa Castañeda along with sophomores Isabella Hartnett and Scarlet Stateler each scored once in the Mariners’ win against the Wildcats in non-league play Saturday afternoon.
Fellow teammates Emily Santiago and Izzy Graff were each credited with one assist. Goalkeeper Evelyn Pini made two saves for Aptos (11-2-1, 5-0-1), which plays at San Lorenzo Valley (2-9, 1-5) on Feb. 4 at 3:30pm.
Boys basketball
Watsonville 81, at Monte Vista Christian 55: Senior guard Max Aceves had a game-best 24 points, including five 3-pointers in the Wildcatz’s win over the Mustangs in PCAL Mission Division play Friday evening.
Junior Leon Madec added 16 points, and junior Tino Razo finished with 14 for Watsonville, which made 14 total shots from beyond the arc.
With the win, the ‘Catz hold a first place lead in the division following North Monterey County’s 58-42 loss to Rancho San Juan, also on Friday night.
Freshman George Madec had eight points for Watsonville, while fellow teammate junior Ahmi Martin contributed six.
Senior guard Nico Downie led the Mustangs in scoring with 12 points, followed by Braden Dobler and Matteo Vidal each with 10 points.
Up next, Watsonville (13-3, 9-1) hosts Marina (7-13, 2-8), while MVC (8-11, 2-8) plays at North Monterey County (13-7, 8-2). Both games are scheduled for Feb. 4 at 7pm.
Girls basketball
Aptos 38, at San Lorenzo Valley 26: Abby Sherwood recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds along with three blocks in the Mariners’ win over the Cougars in SCCAL action Friday night.
Fellow teammate Brekeley Ashby had 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Eliya Chavez contributed five points and a pair of steals. Emi Gansaver-Piltcher added five steals, five rebounds and four blocks for Aptos (12-9, 4-3), which hosts Soquel (5-9, 3-4) on Feb. 4 at 5:30pm.
College baseball
Cabrillo 8, at Mendocino 3: Malakai DuBreuil had a pair of hits including one double and a pair of RBIs in the Seahawks’ win over the Eagles in non-conference play Thursday.
Fellow teammates Nico Hilger and Turett Ross each had one double and scored a pair of runs, while Jay Patterson had one triple.
Pitcher Anders Page-Roth allowed two earned runs on four hits and three walks while picking up one strikeout in 4 and 2/3 innings pitched for Cabrillo (2-2), which plays at Laney on Feb. 4 at 2pm.
