
Watsonville High’s boys’ track and field team capped off an excellent week of competition by winning the O’Condon Invitational at North Monterey County High School on April 5.
The Wildcatz won the team title with a score of 64 points, ahead of Bret Harte (58) in second, hosts North Monterey County (56.33) in third, Pajaro Valley (52) in fourth and North Salinas (36) in fifth.
Watsonville junior LIsandro Pantoja won both the shot put and discus with throws of 42 feet, 10 1/2 inches and 145-11, respectively. Teammate junior Christopher Hernandez (38-5) took fourth in the shot put, while junior Leonel Jarquin (116-11) was third in the discus.
In the 1600 meters, Watsonville sophomore Nain Garcia-Ferria took second in 4:36.37 and junior Desi Salinas-Holz (4:36.54) placed fourth. Teammate senior Gerardo Acosta-Perez took second in the 110m hurdles in 18.36 seconds.
Monte Vista Christian junior Conor Gilliam won the 800m in 2:01.79 and took second in the 400m in 52.70. Teammate junior Gavin Beckmen won the 3200m in 10:10.28.
Pajaro Valley senior Izaak Ocampo won the long jump with a leap of 21-feet, 3 inches, and St. Francis’ 4×100 relay team (Joseph Dayrit, Robert Gomez Jr., Vince Tovar, Coy Jordan) won its race in 45.10 seconds.
Watsonville freshman Noel Navarro was a three-event winner in the Wildcatz’ 110-20 win against Rancho San Juan in the teams’ Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division dual meet April 2. He took first in the 100-meters dash in 12.23 seconds, 200m in 25.37 and the 300m hurdles 50.28.
Teammate senior Gerardo Acosta also won three events. He took first in the 110m hurdles in 19.00, and won both the high jump and pole vault with leaps of 5 feet and 10-00, respectively.
Salinas-Holz won the 3200m in 10:53.49, while Garcia-Ferria won the 800m in 2:11.97 and 1600m in 4:45.74 for Watsonville, which improved to 2-1 in PCAL Mission Division action this season.
Girls track and field
Watsonville 91, Rancho San Juan 42: Senior Katelynn Ruiz won a pair of events in the Wildcatz’s victory over the Trailblazers in the teams’ PCAL Mission Division dual meet April 2. She took first in both the 400m and 1600m in 1:10.02 and 6:10.26, respectively.
Teammate junior Azucena Sandoval won the 800m in 2:41.57, while junior Lizbeth Gomez Abrica won the 3200m in 15:05.73. Senior Jayleen Arredondo won the 100m hurdles and sophomore Paloma Campos won the 300m hurdles in 20.49 and 1:03.16, respectively, for Watsonville, which improved to 2-1 in Mission Division play.
Locals shine at O’Condon Invitational: St. Francis junior Peyton Orradre won both the 100m hurdles (17.00) and 300m hurdles (51.59) at the O’Condon Invitational at North Monterey County High School on April 3. Orradre also took second in the triple jump with a leap of 33-5.
Monte Vista Christian freshman Anna Conca won the 800m in 2:25.52, while Ruiz won the 1600m in 5:23.86. San Lorenzo Valley senior Orea Pollock won the high jump with a mark of 5-2.
Boys golf
Aptos 212, Soquel 223: Sophomore Nick Bjorn shot a 2-over-par 35 at Seascape Golf Club to earn medalist honors in the Mariners’ win over the Knights in SCCAL play Thursday afternoon. Teammates Ben Nowark and William Bartch each shot a 42, followed by Mason Bloom (43) and Jack Garvey (48).
Soquel’s Riley Shank shot a team-best 40, followed by Mateo Adolpho (44), Malaki Mora (45), Kyle Cambrechts (46) and Peter Robbeloth (48).
Next up, Aptos (4-2) plays Harbor at DeLaveaga Golf Course on April 15.
Boys tennis
Aptos 7, San Lorenzo Valley 0: The Mariners swept a shorthanded Cougars team, which defaulted in four lines, in SCCAL play April 3. George Jertberg won his No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-2 over Sawyer Amos in straight sets.
In doubles action, Aptos’ duo of Isaiah Ackerman and Luve Granstrom fought their way to a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Asher Schwarzbach and August Hughes at No. 1.
Aptos’ Dylan Bray and Kal Bhugra won their No. 2 doubles match 6-4, 6-7 (7) against Everett Calendar and James Collins in a three-set tiebreaker. After trailing 5-1 in the tie-break third set, Bray and Bhugra stormed back to win it 10-7.
Scotts Valley 4, Harbor 1: Due to low numbers for both teams, the Falcons defeated the Pirates with just three singles matches played in the teams’ SCCAL match April 4.
Scotts Valley senior Elijah Diamond defeated Harbor sophomore Abraham Bachar 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Falcons junior Lincoln Verinsky beat Harbor’s Luke Griffin 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.
Harbor’s Andreas Martinez defeated Scotts Valley junior Garvasis Kuriakose 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. The Pirates defaulted at No. 4 singles and at No. 1 doubles, while both teams defaulted at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
After a week off for Spring Break, Scotts Valley (2-5, 2-3) will continue SCCAL play by hosting Aptos on April 15 at 4pm.
