The Aptos High Mariners saw their superb season come to a close on Wednesday evening via a 7-0 loss to St. Ignatius in the first round of the Central Coast Section team tournament at the Seascape Sports Club in Aptos.
The Mariners were fresh off posting an undefeated Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League season and capturing their second straight league championship behind a youthful but talented group.
Aptos finished the season 14-3 overall.
It was the second straight season the Mariners have been bounced in the first round of the tournament. Last year, they also lost 7-0 to Carlmont High.
CCS INDIVIDUAL
Aptos senior Kourosh Safari will have a big challenge when the CCS individual tournament begins on May 15 at Imperial Tennis Courts in Aptos.
Safari, the back-to-back SCCAL singles champion, will play No. 1 seed, Issa Yoshida of Westmont High, in the first round of the tournament.
Tournament action is set for a 10 a.m. start.
Safari last year advanced past the first round by beating unseeded Nirmal Vegesna of Evergreen Valley High, 6-1, 6-4.
The Mariners duo of Carter Bond and Jake Kluger will also play in the CCS individual tournament. They will meet Homestead High’s unseeded team of Kush Patel and Andrew Wong in the first round.
Bond and Kluger cruised to the SCCAL’s double title last week with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Soquel High’s Lincoln Cooley and Casey Valcarcel.
