Dozens of people gathered in downtown Watsonville Friday afternoon to celebrate the completion of a new large outdoor mural at Community Bridges at the corner of Main Street and West Lake Avenue.
Titled “Wisdom of Our Elders,” the colorful 225-foot-by-32-foot mural represents a collaboration between Community Bridges, Elderday, and California-based Chicano muralists Augie WK and Jessica Carmen, known as The Jams.
Community Bridges spokesman Tony Nunez said the mural reflects “the depth of knowledge accumulated over a lifetime, the importance of history and the strength of our community.”

Is it me or does the person on the mural look like Aunt Jemima the pancake lady?
Maybe I have no imagination?
Well my artist friend said, “it does to her a little bit” but I do not see her looking like Aunt Jemima so who knows anything goes these days, as long as it does not offend anyone. And I think the intention is noteworthy.
I didn’t take a magnifying glass to see the mural, but I wasn’t able to detect any light skinned figures or they’re very insignificant. We are more than brown skin people in this area.
Why do local murals all look like cartoon’s? Not flattering and really not worth looking at nor do they exhibit any historical significance.
