Singer/songwriter returns to Aptos Street BBQ

APTOS — Singer/songwriter Jeffrey Halford will make his return to Aptos Street BBQ, 8059 Aptos St., on Saturday.

Halford, born in Dallas, Texas, is a highly-regarded Roots-Americana artist. For the past 25 years, he has toured the country numerous times with his band, The Healers. They have played shows with groups such as Taj Mahal, Los Lobos, George Thorogood and Greg Allman.

Music News Nashville dubbed the Marin County-based Halford, “One of the best blues/dobro/slide players on the planet” in a review of his latest album, “Rainmaker.”

Halford last performed at Aptos Street BBQ in February.

First responders sought for Garlic Festival competition

GILROY — The Gilroy Garlic Festival is searching for teams of local first responders to compete in the second annual “Champions for Charity” challenge at the 2017 Festival.

Teams will compete in a three-round cooking challenge on July 28 to win $3,000 for the charity of their choice.

Four teams of two will be selected to compete in three elimination rounds including Appetizer, Entrée and Dessert.  

After each round, a panel of judges will evaluate taste, creativity, appearance and use of garlic to determine who will move on to the next round.

The winning team will be awarded $3,000 to donate to a charity of their choice.

“Last year’s first-ever Champions for Charity event was a huge success, and we are excited to welcome our local heroes to once again compete on behalf of their favorite charities,” said Marcie Morrow, co-chair of the 2017 Gilroy Garlic Festival Recipe Contest Committee. “The competition on the Garlic Cook-Off Stage is intense — and all for a good cause.”

Local firefighters, police officers, and EMTs are encouraged to apply for this event in teams of two. Both parties competing must be non-professional chefs. Online applications can be found at gilroygarlicfestival.com and must be submitted by May 1.

Court seeks volunteers for Civil Grand Jury
 
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — The Superior Court of Santa Cruz County is seeking volunteers to serve on the 2017-2018 Civil Grand Jury.

The 19 members of the Civil Grand Jury are an independent body empowered to investigate the operations of city and county governments as well as other tax-supported agencies and special districts. They also respond to citizen complaints on government issues.

Candidates for the grand jury must be United States citizens, at least 18 years of age, have a working knowledge of the English language and have resided in the county for at least one year. All qualified citizens interested in serving on the 2017-2018 Civil Grand Jury are invited to submit an application to the Superior Court of Santa Cruz County for consideration.
