Fundraisers support robotics program
WATSONVILLE — Two fundraisers are scheduled to support the robotics program at Pajaro Valley Unified School District.
Straw Hat Pizza, 2026 Freedom Blvd. in Watsonville, will hold a fundraiser on Feb. 21 from 5-10 p.m., followed by Ella’s at the Airport, 100 Aviation Way in Watsonville, on March 7 all day.
A percentage of proceeds will support robotics teams with materials, competition registration and traveling for winning teams to attend the national competition.

Corralitos Woman’s Club accepting scholarship applications
CORRALITOS — The Corralitos Woman’s Club is currently accepting college scholarship applications from local students.
Applicants must be a high school student in Pajaro Valley, or a resident of the following zip codes: 95076, 95019 and 95003.
Submissions are due March 15 and should be mailed to: Corralitos Woman’s Club, P.O. Box 997, Freedom, CA 95019-0997.

Italian Catholic Federation holding dinners
CAPITOLA — The Italian Catholic Federation is holding its 38th annual Lenten Fish Fry Dinners beginning Friday and continuing on Fridays through March 23 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 435 Monterey Ave., Capitola.
The dinners are served from 5-7 p.m., with take-out orders beginning at 4:30 p.m. The cost is $15 per adult, $7 per child aged 5-12, and $35 per family (including children 12 and under). Children under 5 are free.
The menu is fried calamari and grilled or baked fish, side dish, salad and bread, with the types of salads and side dishes varying from week to week. Drinks (soda, wine and beer) and dessert are also available.

Choraliers present winter show
CAPITOLA — The Choraliers of Capitola will present their winter show, “Like a Gypsy Would Do,” on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mid-County Senior Center, 829 Bay Ave. in Capitola.
The storyline features local vocalist Rocky Pase as George, a new dean of music at a small-town college. He has romantic problems that are solved by the Choraliers.
Shows are video-taped for future viewing on CTV, Channel 27.

Pianists arrive in Santa Cruz
SANTA CRUZ — The Distinguished Aritists Concert and Lecture Series will present Ching-Yun Hu and prodigies of the Philadelphia Young Pianists Academy on Saturday from 7:30-9 p.m. at Peace United Church, 900 High St. in Santa Cruz.
Hu will be joined by Nicole Liu, 16, and Tianju Liano, 15, as well as pianist John Orlando. They will perform works by Bach and Chopin, including Chopin Ballade #1.
Before the concert, a master class will be held for young pianists from 2-4 p.m. Donations will be taken at the door.

Grant recommended for groundwater sustainability
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — The California Department of Water Resources recommended three grants in Santa Cruz County recently, totaling up to $4 million to help the development of state-mandated groundwater sustainability plans.
Funding for the grant will come from Proposition 1, passed in 2014. Before funding is finalized, DWR will be holding a public comment period open through Feb. 21 at 5 p.m.
Once funding is finalized, the Santa Margarita Groundwater Agency will receive $1 million while the Santa Cruz Mid-County Groundwater Agency and the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency will each receive $1.5 million.
The SMGWA and MGA are joint power authorities. The SMGWA includes the Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley Water Districts and the County of Santa Cruz. The MGA is composed of the Soquel Creek Water District, the City of Santa Cruz and the Central Water District. The PVWMA oversees groundwater management in the Lower Pajaro Valley, including portions of Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito counties.
