Watsonville Wednesday returns
WATSONVILLE — Watsonville Wednesday – Lunch in the Park returns on July 19 from noon until 1 p.m. in the City Plaza Park.
Turkey Pozole will be served by The Turkey Boat to the first 30 people to arrive.
The event is an opportunity to meet city and business leaders in the community.

UC Master Gardeners hold free clinic
WATSONVILLE — On July 22, UC Master Gardener Karina Gaille will be teaching a free class on using organic materials to create a foodscape, titled “Straw Bale Gardening and Hugelkulture.”
The class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the UCMG Demonstration Garden, next to the rear parking lot at 1430 Freedom Blvd. in Watsonville.
Learn how to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers in a bale of straw from UC Master Gardener Paul Fisler. Straw bale gardening is like container gardening; a way to create a raised garden bed that works for most vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Obon Festival scheduled
WATSONVILLE — The Watsonville Buddhist Temple, 423 Bridge St., will hold its annual Obon Festival on Sunday.
Things will kick off at noon, with a farmers market and food stands opening. At 2 p.m. there will be special performance on the Koto. Watsonville Taiko will then take to the stage at 3:30 p.m. The main dancing event begins at 4 p.m.

Local authors to sign books in San Juan Bautista
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA — Authors DJ Smith and Joyce Oroz will be at Jardines de San Juan, 115 Third St. in San Juan Bautista, Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Smith writes juvenile and young adult fantasy. Her book series, “Secrets Beyond Scymaria” revolves around a boy and a girl dealing with classmates, evil professors and a guarded magic portal to another world.
Oroz writes adult mystery novels, and is best known for her Josephine Stuart mystery series, centered in local towns.
