WATSONVILLE — A man was flown to a trauma center with major injuries Friday night after a collision at Main Street and South Green Valley Road, Watsonville Police Sgt. Michael Ridgway said.
According to Ridgway, the 30-year-old victim, who lives in Santa Cruz, was driving a blue Chevrolet pickup south on Main Street at about 9:10 p.m. when he struck a blue Jeep which had just turned right onto Main Street from South Green Valley Road.
The collision sent the pickup out of control, crossing both lanes of southbound Main Street, and then over the sidewalk, into the bus stop shelter and across a lawn area into a tree.
The pickup then rolled over and came to rest upside down near 1985 Main St.
The female driving the Jeep and her children were unharmed, Ridgway said.
Main Street was closed for several hours while police investigated the collision.
Officers found a dog that was in the pickup in the area of the CVS drugstore on Main Street, and took it to a shelter.
A Watsonville man was arrested during the investigation, after he challenged officers that responded to the crash.
Everado Sanchez, 35, was charged with interfering and delaying officers. He was taken to Santa Cruz County Jail, where jail staff refused to house him because he had a fresh tattoo, Ridgway said.
Officers later released Sanchez with a citation and a court date.
