WATSONVILLE—A 17-year-old Salinas male was arrested Sunday for driving while intoxicated after a crash that injured his three passengers, California Highway Patrol officer Julieta Trenado said.

According to Trenado, the driver was traveling in a gray Nissan Altima west on Beach Road approaching Clearwater Lane around 8:40pm at a high speed when he lost control and ran off the road.

The Nissan then plunged into a ditch, struck a wooden utility pole, overturned and landed on its wheels in an agricultural field.

The two rear passengers were unrestrained and were ejected from the Nissan, Trenado said. Two female passengers, 16 and 17, both from Watsonville, and an 18-year-old man from Salinas, were taken to Natividad Hospital with major, life-threatening injuries.

The driver was taken to Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall. The collision is still under investigation.
