R-P STAFF REPORT

Cabrillo College has yet to secure an American-Golden Coast Conference victory this season.

If recent history is any indication, that will change on Saturday.

Cabrillo (3-3, 0-2) has beaten Gavilan College (0-7, 0-3) in three of their last four meetings.

The Seahawks will try to continue that recent success against the Rams at Carl Conelly Stadium in their 1 p.m. game.

Like Cabrillo, Gavilan has yet to win a conference game this fall. Unlike Cabrillo, Gavilan has been blown out in all three of its conference defeats, losing by an average of 23.3 points.

The Seahawks, meanwhile, have been on the edge of success in their two conference losses against Hartnell College and Reedley College. They fell in double-overtime against Hartnell, and gave up a game-winning score with 17 seconds left in their loss to Reedley.

Here are a few things to watch on Saturday:

PICK CITY

Although the Gavilan defense has struggled as a unit — it’s allowing 36.7 points and 413.3 yards per game, the defensive backfield has been noteworthy. The Rams are tied for second in the state in interceptions with 12. Freshmen Alec Calderon and Nathan Aguayo and sophomore Cecil Murphy each have three picks.

That trio will try to stop Cabrillo’s passing attack, which last week threw three interceptions.

PROTECT THE QB

It was an ugly day for the Cabrillo offensive line last week, as Yuba College recorded six sacks in its 21-14 triumph over the Seahawks.

Cabrillo will need to give its signal caller — whoever that might be this week — more time to pass on Saturday. The good news? Gavilan has just seven sacks on the season.

STOPPING GARCIA

Rams sophomore wideout Corey Garcia has been one of the best in California this season. He leads the state in receptions (54), and is second in yards (715). However, he was held to just five receptions for 34 yards in last week’s loss to Reedley.
